Hotel Plaza Athénée Paris : History

History of Plaza Athénée

In 1852 Emperor Napoléon III commissioned Georges Haussmann to transform Paris, a quiet medieval city, into a modern, bustling capital that would enjoy worldwide recognition. During this period, many legendary hotels were built that have today become symbols of traditional French style.

The Hôtel Plaza Athénée opened its doors at 25 avenue Montaigne in 1911. Parisian and international society quickly flocked to its elegant salons, and by 1936, the hotel had received international recognition. The hotel soon gained an enviable reputation for luxury, service and glamour that was enhanced when, in 1946, the opening of Christian Dior turned avenue Montaigne into a place of 'haute couture'.

The complete refurbishment in 2000 married its traditional classical style to the most modern technology, further enhancing its already legendary reputation as one of the great hotels of the world.
